Coram Chambers barrister Maya Achan has started her Pegasus Scholarship journey in Delhi. After receiving the prestigious Pegasus Scholarship, Maya is spending two months working in India, organised by the Hingorani Foundation.
For her first placement, Maya worked for two weeks with Shreya Singhal, a highly respected Advocate in Delhi. She joined Shreya and a team of junior advocates on a range of family law cases. Maya observed hearings at the Supreme Court, High Court and District Courts. She also attended several client conferences and witnessed a police interrogation at a local station.
One standout case involved concurrent proceedings in Dubai and raised complex jurisdictional questions. This offered Maya valuable insight into the challenges of cross–border family law practice.

During the placement, the Bar Council of England and Wales hosted a Family Law Symposium focused on cross-jurisdictional issues between India and England and Wales. Maya attended the event with her Delhi colleagues. She also participated in a seminar hosted by the Delhi Family Lawyers Association and the Delhi High Court Women Lawyers Forum. At this seminar, the Honourable Justice Surya Kant and Barbara Mills KC spoke about the emerging trends and challenges in family law in both countries.
Maya’s next placement is at the Neev Foundation, an NGO focused on publicly funded representation, mediation, and legal awareness for deprived communities. Maya is thankful to Inner Temple, the Pegasus Scholarship Trust, and the Hingorani Foundation for this opportunity.
