What is mediation?

Mediation is a structured way of resolving children or financial disputes without the stress and delay of a court process.

Courts expect parties to actively engage in mediation to resolve their differences before embarking on a court-based resolution.

Key benefits of mediation

Mediation is much less attritional than going to court, and it can help to maintain communication and supportive relationships.

It is a private and confidential process and enables discussion without concern that anything said can be later used in court.

Our mediation process

Coram can offer an impartial mediator who will facilitate a discussion to enable the participants to find their own outcome, rather than one imposed on them by a court.

Each participant will have an individual confidential discussion with the mediator at the start of the process to discuss desired outcomes and to check the suitability of the process.

Flexible joint mediation meetings

The process for the joint mediation meetings can be flexible in terms of timing and location.

Often a series of short meetings (90 mins) is arranged or, if more suitable, a half day or a full day. This may be with just the mediator or, if the participants agree, their solicitors/counsel may be present to offer advice and support.

We can also offer a process where the mediator can “shuttle” between the participants to enable them to feel comfortable engaging in the discussion.

From mediation to Court Order

Mediation can lead to an agreement which can be converted into a court order.

Expert family law mediators

All our mediators at Coram are experts in the field of family law. They are either Resolution or CEDR trained.

We can also offer MIAMs to enable a court application to commence.
