Care Orders Granted for Two Young Children Following Family Court Decision

Final care orders for two young children were approved in Thurrock after Coram Chambers barristers Yasmeen Jamil and Lucy Taylor appeared in court. The judgment addresses child protection, domestic abuse, and the local authority’s plan for long–term foster care.

In a family law case, Yasmeen Jamil and Lucy Taylor, barristers from Coram Chambers, played key roles in the recently reported matter of J and K (Placement Order Application: Wider Family Members) [2025] EWFC 220 (B). The proceedings, presided over by Her Honour Judge Reardon, centred on the future of two young siblings, S (aged 6) and D (aged 4), amid pressing concerns for their welfare.

The court was presented with harrowing details regarding the children’s home life – marked by persistent neglect, parental substance misuse, poor mental health, and ongoing domestic abuse. These factors had resulted in S and D being removed from their parents’ care and living with their maternal grandmother under interim arrangements.

Thurrock Borough Council, acting in the interests of the children, sought final care orders and advocated for a long–term foster care plan. This application was fully endorsed by the children’s guardian, who recognised the necessity of providing a stable and safe environment. Following a thorough examination of the evidence, the judge found that the threshold for care proceedings had been decisively met. She concluded that long–term fostering represented the best outcome for S and D, given that their parents were unable to provide the consistent, secure care essential for their development – both now and in the foreseeable future.

This judgment highlights the court’s paramount concern for the safety, stability, and emotional well-being of children in vulnerable situations. Yasmeen and Lucy’s involvement highlights Coram Chambers’ continued commitment to safeguarding the rights and futures of children in complex family law proceedings.

The case serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by local authorities and legal professionals in protecting children from harm and securing their best interests when families are in crisis.
