Coram are thrilled to announce that Shiva Ancliffe and Michael Horton will be appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2021.

Mark Twomey QC and Alison Easton, Joint Heads of Chambers, have said:

We wish to congratulate Mike and Shiva on their wonderful achievement. This is an appropriate acknowledgement of the excellence of each of them and the respect in which they are held by their peers and the judiciary. It is also a wonderful day for Coram Chambers and a fantastic way to end the year.

Shiva is a Family Law barrister, specialising in private children law, especially those involving an international element. Shiva has a growing arbitration practice and her wealth of experience in private children matters as well as her fair approach make her ideally suited for children’s arbitration work.

She has extensive experience in care proceedings and undertakes very complex cases including non-accidental injury cases. She also regularly represents vulnerable parents at times through the Official Solicitor. Shiva is well known at the family bar as a forceful and persuasive advocate who fights very hard for her clients. She is very good at gaining the confidence and trust of both her solicitors and clients.

Michael specialises in complex financial remedy cases and in ToLATA disputes. He has particular experience of appellate work and work with an international element.

Michael represented the appellant in the high profile case of Villiers v Villiers, which was heard in the Supreme Court in 2019. The appeal concerned whether the English family court had any power to stay Mrs Villiers’ application for maintenance under s 27 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 given the couple were getting divorced in Scotland. Commenting on the work done by Michael Horton and Alexander Laing on behalf of Mr Villiers, Lord Wilson said ‘The amount of work which they have done for him is phenomenal; and its high quality will become evident as this judgment proceeds.’
