Katy Rensten

Barrister
Call 2010

About Me

Before joining the bar in 2010, Katy practiced as a solicitor and advocate (qualifying in 1996). She was a partner and head of the family law department at Levenes solicitors following which she practiced as a freelance advocate (with higher rights of audience) and consultant at Eskinazi and Co. Katy was a member of the Law Society’s Children and Family Law panels and sat as a member of the law society children law subcommittee. Katy was also an active member of the Family Justice Council diversity sub committee. She was a Resolution trained (non practising) mediator.
As a solicitor, although specialising in children law work, she also undertook the full range of family law work, including financial remedies and child abduction. She was conducting solicitor in a number of reported cases (ranging in subject matter from wrongful removal of a child to the use of nullity petitions in forced marriage through to judicial review for rejected adopters). Katy undertook complex care cases in which she acted as both solicitor and advocate. Before moving to the Bar, she was developing a growing practice acting in judicial review and human rights claims arising out of family law matters.
Since coming to the Bar, Katy has continued to specialise in both public and private children law cases. She has a particular interest in representing parties involved in adoption and acting in cases involving “alternative families”. Katy also has experience representing parties in cases involving forced marriage. In the public law arena, she represents all parties including parents, relatives and foster carers often in cases with complex factual backgrounds and allegations of non-accidental injury.
Katy has experience providing legal training for voluntary sector organisations.
Katy regularly contributes to the Family Law Week website. She is also a contributor to the recent volume of “LGBTQ Divorce and Relationship Dissolution“, which was published by the Oxford University Press.
